Google's Gemini App Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users
Google's Gemini app has passed 1 billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in company history and putting its reach in the same range as ChatGPT.
How people are actually using it
Google shared usage data alongside the milestone. Voice has become the dominant way people interact with the assistant: 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini, and busy parents are 43% more likely than average to use voice for everyday tasks. One in five Gemini Live interactions go beyond voice entirely, using live camera feeds or screen sharing for real-time problem-solving, a pattern especially popular with DIYers and students. Among students specifically, 38% of school-related requests now include an uploaded file or image.
On the creative side, Gemini generates more than 150 million images every day, and Google specifically called out small businesses as a group using its combined image, video, and audio tools to produce marketing materials. On Android, Gemini can now automate actions across more than 40 popular apps, covering things like booking rides and reserving restaurant tables, a capability Google expanded further this week with new connected apps for booking home services and doctor's appointments. On Apple devices, Gemini has more than 100 million active iOS users, and macOS users prompt it roughly twice as often as people on other platforms.
Why this matters to small and medium businesses
A billion monthly users means Gemini is no longer a niche alternative to ChatGPT — it's a default AI surface many of your customers already have open on their phone. It's worth periodically checking what Gemini says when asked about your business, the same way you'd check your Google Business Profile or search rankings.
Google is explicitly positioning Gemini's combined image, video, and audio generation as a small business marketing tool, not just a consumer novelty. If you haven't tried using it to draft social posts, product images, or short promotional clips, this is a direct signal from Google that it's meant to be used that way, and it's likely cheaper than hiring out that work.
The shift toward voice-first, action-taking AI means "being findable by an assistant" is becoming as important as being findable by search. As more everyday tasks, bookings, and purchases get delegated to an AI agent instead of typed into a search bar, keeping your business information accurate everywhere Gemini might pull from is quickly becoming standard digital hygiene, not an edge case.
