OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens
OpenAI has launched a teen-specific version of ChatGPT for users 13 to 17, automatically routing in anyone its age-prediction system estimates is under 18, whether they say so or not.
What's different in teen mode
The global rollout began August 18, with OpenAI expecting to finish within two weeks. Teens don't need a separate account: if a user says they're under 18, or OpenAI's age-prediction system estimates it, the teen experience simply becomes their default. It adds stronger content restrictions around suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual conversations, and blocks ChatGPT from using romantic language or terms of endearment with teens. The model is also more strongly instructed not to imply it has feelings, consciousness, or emotions, a change OpenAI says is meant to reduce emotional dependence on the chatbot.
Other changes include homework and study support designed to help teens learn rather than simply hand over finished answers or essays, more frequent break reminders during long sessions, reminders that they're talking to AI rather than a person, and warnings before uploading images that might be private or sensitive. "If we predict you're under 18, this becomes your default experience," said Lauren Jonas, OpenAI's head of youth and families.
The age-prediction system isn't perfect: reports since launch describe some adult users being misidentified and stuck in the more restrictive teen mode, which OpenAI allows people to appeal by verifying their age.
Why this matters to small and medium businesses
If you employ teens who use ChatGPT for real work tasks, don't assume it behaves the same for them as for adult staff. The teen mode's added restrictions and tone changes could affect how useful it is for certain work, and misfires in age prediction mean even a young-looking adult employee could get routed into it unexpectedly.
If your business serves families, schools, or younger customers, age-prediction and content-restriction systems like this one are becoming the norm across consumer AI, not a one-off OpenAI policy. It's worth understanding what a teen or child would actually experience with any AI tool you recommend or build into your product.
This is also a preview of where AI regulation is heading generally. Age verification, content restrictions by user category, and mandatory safety defaults are exactly the kind of measures regulators have been pushing for; expect similar requirements to eventually apply to other AI products your business uses or builds, not just consumer chatbots.
